A device’s “click wheel” is a component found on most older gadgets such as Apple’s classic iPods, and is responsible for controlling the system settings such as volume & backlight as well as the function of navigating through the device’s songs, videos, etc.
The typical click wheel is made up of a front bezel, center button, and cable which connect to the unit’s logic board. In addition to the scroll feature, the 5 basic commands of the click wheel consist of the “Menu” option, “Rewind” or “Restart”, “Fast Forward” or “Skip”, “Play” or “Pause”, and “Click” or “Select”.
The click wheel often requires replacement when the device no longer scrolls, or the buttons do no respond, or the center click button is unresponsive or hard to press, or the click wheel becomes scratched and dented or otherwise unsightly.
If the functionality of your click wheel begins to behave erratically, or stops working, it might require replacement. In some cases, the device’s internal battery can become swollen and press against the click wheel causing the click wheel to react undesirably. Certain issue can also be closely related to a faulty logic board, often due to exposure to liquid, so a closer examination is required to determine the extent of the damage.
